Classification mapping
Source
1. Scope and Applicability
This PCR covers production of fresh, whole, unprocessed fruit-bearing vegetables that are classified in CPC 3.0:01239, from field or protected-cultivation establishment through managed production, harvest, optional primary conditioning, and farm-gate hand-off. The category is a residual classification leaf: the declared species, cultivar, route, production geography, crop cycle, and market state must be recorded for every dataset. Open-field and protected cultivation are both eligible when their route-specific inputs and boundary are documented.
The PCR excludes chillies and green peppers (01231), cucumbers and gherkins (01232), eggplants (01233), tomatoes (01234), pumpkins, squash and gourds (01235), all other CPC leaves, seed or transplant production for sale as planting material, processed or cut products, preservation, distribution after farm-gate transfer, retail, and consumption. A product is not moved into this residual category merely to avoid a more specific CPC classification.
2. Product Category Identity
| Field | Value |
|---|---|

| Required qualifiers | declared species and cultivar; CPC 01239 classification basis; production geography; production year and crop-cycle dates; open-field or protected route; irrigated or rainfed route; maturity and harvest window; size and market-grade criteria; whole or damaged state; washed or unwashed state; primary packaging state; destination of off-grade product and crop residues |
The reference product identity is platform-verified against the CPC 3.0 product flow for this category; the selected UUID is retained without a dataset version. The mass flow property and mass unit group are the stable support objects for this reference flow.
When constructing a foreground data package, the items listed in Required qualifiers must be declared in dataset metadata, process notes, reference flow comment, product description, or an equivalent data package field. Missing required qualifiers make the reference flow definition incomplete for that data package.
This reference UUID denotes the fresh, unprocessed farm-gate product. Verify actual species, product state and handoff before applying the binding. An independent pack-house, further-processed or otherwise incompatible output requires separately verified identity and must not inherit this UUID. Identity verification does not change the actual system boundary or quantity-normalization requirements of this PCR.
4. Measurement and Unit Rules
| rule_id | Applies to | Required property | Required unit | Rule |
|---|---|---|---|---|
reference_product_mass | marketable farm-gate product | Mass | kg | Keep gross harvested product, marketable product, downgraded product, rejects, and crop residues separate before normalizing to 1,000 kg marketable output. |
species_route_separation | mixed species, cultivars, sites, or routes | Mass and area | kg and ha | Record each declared species or cultivar, production site, route, and crop cycle separately; aggregate only after applying the declared allocation basis. |
nutrient_basis | mineral and organic nutrient inputs | Mass of product and nutrient | kg product, kg N, kg P2O5, or kg K2O | Record the supplied product and the declared nutrient basis. Convert product mass to nutrient mass only from documented composition; do not count one compound product more than once. |
water_basis | irrigation and conditioning water | Volume | m3 | Record irrigation delivery and conditioning water separately. Keep rainfall and water-resource withdrawal distinct from purchased or delivered water. |
energy_basis | field, harvest, and conditioning energy | Mass, energy, or service | kg fuel, kWh, or service unit | Record each energy carrier or machinery service with its meter, receipt, or service record. Do not infer electricity or fuel from area unless the calculation method and source are disclosed. |
moisture_and_grade | harvested and farm-gate output | Mass and product state | kg and declared moisture basis | Report the moisture, maturity, grade, and state at farm-gate hand-off. Do not normalize water removed during washing or conditioning as product output. |
5. System Boundary
Boundary Abstraction
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| declared_starting_condition | Prepared agricultural field or declared protected-cultivation site receiving seed or transplants, with prior land use, infrastructure status, and pre-plant operations disclosed |
| starting_condition_role | Beginning of the declared species- and route-specific crop cycle |
| product_classification_scope | Fresh whole fruit-bearing vegetables classified under CPC 3.0:01239 through farm-gate hand-off |
| recursive_input_rule | Purchased seed or transplants are upstream planting-material inputs and are linked once. A product-category output is not recreated as an internal production process merely because a nursery or propagator supplied it. |
| upstream_dataset_requirement | Require compatible upstream datasets for planting material, fertilizers or amendments, crop-protection products, irrigation or purchased water, energy and machinery services, packaging, and treatment services when used. |
| disclosure | Declare species and cultivar, site and route, prior land use, crop-cycle dates, irrigation regime, nutrient products and nutrient basis, crop-protection program, protected-cultivation infrastructure if applicable, field-emission method, residue and reject destinations, harvest and conditioning operations, packaging, and farm-gate hand-off. |

boundary_declared_crop_cycle | establishment through final harvest | Include field or protected-site establishment, planting or transplanting, crop management, and every harvest belonging to the declared species-, site-, and year-specific crop cycle. | fao-gap-framework-2003 |
boundary_farm_gate | harvest and conditioning | End the foreground boundary when the marketable whole product is transferred at the declared farm-gate hand-off. Include on-farm grading, washing, cooling, and primary packaging only when they occur before that hand-off. | fao-postharvest-handling-vegetables; codex-cxc-53-2003-fresh-produce |
boundary_protected_route | greenhouse, tunnel, or other protected cultivation | Include route-specific energy, water, consumables, and infrastructure services that are assigned to the declared crop cycle. Disclose infrastructure lifetime and allocation when the infrastructure is shared. | fao-gap-framework-2003 |
boundary_managed_soils | nutrient, amendment, residue, and soil flows | Include direct and indirect managed-soil emissions attributable to applied nutrients and returned residues under one declared method. Do not double count emissions already represented by an upstream dataset. | ipcc-2019-refinement-managed-soils; ipcc-2006-guidelines-agriculture |
boundary_residue_and_reject_fate | off-grade product, rejects, residues, wastewater, and packaging waste | Record the first declared destination of every non-marketable stream: field return, feed, composting, treatment, disposal, or another documented use. An unreported destination is a data-quality gap and is not an automatic co-product. | fao-postharvest-handling-vegetables; fao-gap-framework-2003 |

Urea fertilizer (managed_fruiting_vegetable_production_agricultural_nutrient_inputs_urea)
Collection scope and applicability for managed_fruiting_vegetable_production_agricultural_nutrient_inputs. The following concrete identities have separate cards and apply only when use or generation is evidenced inside the original process scope. They are not mandatory inputs or a default recipe. Document non-use; missing records are not zero. Add a separate concrete card for any other actual material instead of substituting one of these names or UUIDs. Preserve attribution and boundaries and avoid double counting components included in outsourced services.
Collect each fertilizer product separately. Preserve each actual product identity, quantity, formulation, nutrient composition, application event, and allocation; do not count a compound product more than once. Raw activity or stage basis: per 1,000 kg marketable farm-gate output.
Confirm identity, grade, state and unit from equipment, supplier and contemporaneous measurements; the product UUID does not establish actual use or upstream-provider compatibility. Count physical product mass once and retain moisture, N/P/K composition and application events; nutrient quantities are calculated attributes, not additional purchases of the same product. Give unlisted compound and organic fertilizers separate cards identified by formulation or feedstock.

Polyethylene wrapping film (flexible_primary_packaging_pe_film)
Collection scope and applicability for flexible_primary_packaging.
Flexible film, bags, wraps, or similar primary packaging are included only when supplied before farm-gate transfer. The material, mass, reuse status, and packaging loss must be reported. Raw activity or stage basis: per 1,000 kg marketable farm-gate output.
Confirm identity, grade, state and unit from equipment, supplier and contemporaneous measurements; the UUID remains unverified. Record composition, net mass, reuse cycles and return losses; attribute reusable items by actual use and separate packaging from product mass. Keep distinct treatment destinations separate without assuming recycling credits.

Energy-related carbon dioxide (energy_carbon_dioxide_emission)
Calculate only the fossil CO2 physically released by fuel combustion inside this foreground operation. For each actually burned fuel, use measured fuel mass or volume converted by documented density and net calorific value to the activity unit of its compatible combustion-only kg CO2 factor; sum fuel-specific releases, attribute once and normalize once to matched accepted final output. Preserve fossil versus biogenic carbon. Purchased electricity, purchased heat and inclusive transport or machinery-service life-cycle factors are upstream burdens, not local elementary CO2 releases. Link those supply/service datasets once; if combustion is explicitly disaggregated, exclude that same combustion from the linked dataset boundary. Do not add supply-chain CO2 or CO2-equivalent totals to this substance-mass card. Demonstrated absence of local fossil combustion makes this card inapplicable; missing records do not establish zero.

7. Allocation and Co-product Handling
| rule_id | Applies to | Rule | source_ids |
|---|---|---|---|
allocation_same_species_and_route | multiple fields, sites, cultivars, or protected routes | Keep records separate through normalization. If aggregation is necessary, allocate shared inputs and infrastructure by marketable mass unless a more representative physical relationship is documented. | fao-gap-framework-2003 |
allocation_marketable_and_off_grade | marketable and declared off-grade product streams | Use mass allocation when off-grade material has a declared product destination. If off-grade material is discarded or returned to soil, model its destination and do not allocate it as a marketable co-product. | fao-postharvest-handling-vegetables |
allocation_reusable_packaging | reusable crates and containers | Allocate packaging production and replacement over documented service cycles and assign losses to the relevant route. A single-use packaging record is not spread over undocumented cycles. | fao-postharvest-handling-vegetables |
allocation_shared_protected_infrastructure | shared greenhouse, tunnel, irrigation, cooling, or conditioning equipment | Allocate shared infrastructure and energy by documented occupied area, operating time, throughput, or mass. State the selected basis and avoid assigning all shared burden to one crop without evidence. | fao-gap-framework-2003 |
allocation_residue_destination | residues and rejects with different destinations | Preserve destination-specific rows. Field return, composting, feed, treatment, and disposal are separate pathways and are not interchangeable co-products. | fao-gap-framework-2003 |
Concrete cards do not inherit numerical ranges from the former aggregate card. Determine quantities from original records, stock/meter reconciliation and the declared reference flow; no default quantity or numeric screen is supplied without evidence matching the identity, unit, period and boundary. Missing range evidence is a quality disclosure, not zero use or proof of completeness.
8. Foreground Data Collection, Calculation, and Quality Rules
Specific input identification before dataset completion
Identify the actual input for this operation from supplier specifications, equipment and primary records. This is a mandatory collection requirement, not an exchange. Before dataset completeness, represent each used material, formulated product, carrier or independently purchased service by one physically specific card with its native quantity/property; confirm a compatible UUID, or retain an explicit unresolved identity and do not claim a fully linked dataset. Do not substitute a conditional example for an unknown actual input, invent a recipe, omit required use or infer zero from missing records. Attribute shared use, reusable assets and inclusive services once; preserve the original stage/period and measured throughput link to final reference output. The former aggregate range is not a component limit or consumption default.

crop_protection_input_specific_input | cp_crop_protection_records | Operation managed_fruiting_vegetable_production: Record the active substance or formulated crop-protection product used for the declared crop cycle, including application timing and treated area. Product identity remains a foreground resolution requirement because the broad CPC category spans multiple species. Original quantity method: Record product name, active substance, formulation, applied mass or volume, concentration, application date, and treated area. |
rigid_primary_packaging_specific_input | cp_packaging_records | Operation harvest_conditioning_and_farm_gate: Rigid containers supplied before the farm gate are recorded by material, mass, number of reuse cycles, and loss. They are not combined with flexible packaging in the same row when the material or reuse basis differs. Original quantity method: Record container mass, number, material, and reuse cycles; apply the declared allocation over service cycles. |
Retain raw site, lot, cycle and stage quantities and denominators in each collection protocol. Reconcile stocks, losses, moisture and co-product attribution first, then normalize: normalized exchange = attributable raw exchange × declared reference quantity / accepted hand-off product quantity on the same boundary and measurement basis. Apply perennial-establishment and shared-operation attribution before this normalization. Never set an internal-transfer quantity equal to the final reference quantity. Per declared reference flow means the amount, unit and product state in section 3; the data package must declare its actual route and gate.

Convert measured volumes only with a compatible documented density. Internal recirculation remains within that boundary and cancels; do not subtract it again from fresh-water inflow. A genuinely external reclaimed-water receipt is an external inflow. Retain liquid discharge separately from its dry solids/pollutant masses. Prefer measured discharge and use the balance as reconciliation; missing components or unexplained residuals are gaps, not automatic wastewater, evaporation or zero. | water input; reuse; discharge; balance terms | wastewater volume | fao-postharvest-handling-vegetables |
calc_energy_emissions | energy-related CO2 and particulate matter | Calculate only the fossil CO2 physically released by fuel combustion inside this foreground operation. Demonstrated absence of local fossil combustion makes this card inapplicable; missing records do not establish zero. | energy record; factor | elementary emissions | ipcc-2006-energy-combustion-boundary |
calc_route_specific_infrastructure | protected-cultivation infrastructure | Allocate infrastructure and shared equipment over documented service life and occupied area, operating time, throughput, or mass; disclose the chosen basis. | infrastructure record; service life; allocation basis | route-specific burden | fao-gap-framework-2003 |
planting_material_input_identity_and_fate | field_or_site_establishment | For the original planting_material_input collection role at this operation, identify the actual physical form, species/material, composition, state and supply/treatment boundary before creating exchanges. Each seed lot, transplant, crown, cutting, larval stage, formulation, coating, preservative or separated residue actually used/generated requires its own concrete card where relevant to this role; these examples are alternatives, not a required recipe. Retain existing collection records and route-specific source evidence. Count-based planting records require measured or supplier-supported mass-per-unit when matched to a mass-based provider; retain count and mass as linked attributes rather than two purchases. Do not merge separate husk/shell or separate agents. A real mixed stream requires composition and recipient evidence and is counted once. Before completeness, record every applicable amount and native unit, link a compatible verified UUID or explicitly unresolved identity, preserve stock/return attribution, and normalize the attributable raw quantity once to the accepted reference output. Missing records are not zero; aggregate ranges are not individual-input defaults. | cp_planting_material_records | Identity-specific exchanges and reconciled activity records | fao-gap-framework-2003 |
chemical_species_mass_accounting | elementary_nutrient_emissions | Final elementary exchanges use the mass of the identified substance and one actual receiving compartment. Keep nutrient/activity ledgers separate: species-specific N2O-N × 44/28 gives N2O, NH3-N × 17/14 gives NH3, nitrate-N × 62/14 gives nitrate, and phosphate-P × 95/31 gives phosphate. If the selected flow is elemental phosphorus instead, report kg P and convert phosphate mass by 31/95 only when that species basis is evidenced. Apply a conversion exactly once only when the method output is on the elemental basis; measured compound mass is not reconverted. Total nutrient losses cannot be assigned to a single species without a supported split, and residual/retained soil nutrient is not an emission. Keep direct/indirect pathway ledgers and avoid repeating a pathway already included in the chosen method or upstream inventory. Factor uncertainty ranges screen factors on their stated basis, not final compound amounts or admissible site emissions. Normalize the attributable compound mass once using the accepted reference quantity and the matched measured output. Unknown activity, identity or compartment remains an evidence gap and blocks a completeness claim. | cp_nutrient_and_residue_records; species-specific activity ledger, method pathway and factor basis, matched accepted output | Identity-specific exchanges and reconciled activity records |

Evidence applicability: cited general farm-record and postharvest frameworks do not supply crop-specific yields, lifetimes, gate cutoffs or LCA allocation defaults. Those are this PCR methodology decisions; qualify them by the actual species, route and period and obtain compatible agronomic evidence before asserting completeness. Provisional author ranges are screening aids, not empirical acceptance limits or substituted measurements.

|---|---|---|---|
boundary_declared_crop_cycle | establishment through final harvest | Include field or protected-site establishment, planting or transplanting, crop management, and every harvest belonging to the declared species-, site-, and year-specific crop cycle. | fao-gap-framework-2003 |
boundary_farm_gate | harvest and conditioning | End the foreground boundary when the marketable whole product is transferred at the declared farm-gate hand-off. Include on-farm grading, washing, cooling, and primary packaging only when they occur before that hand-off. | fao-postharvest-handling-vegetables, codex-cxc-53-2003-fresh-produce |
boundary_protected_route | greenhouse, tunnel, or other protected cultivation | Include route-specific energy, water, consumables, and infrastructure services that are assigned to the declared crop cycle.
Do not double count emissions already represented by an upstream dataset. | ipcc-2019-refinement-managed-soils, ipcc-2006-guidelines-agriculture |
boundary_residue_and_reject_fate | off-grade product, rejects, residues, wastewater, and packaging waste | Record the first declared destination of every non-marketable stream: field return, feed, composting, treatment, disposal, or another documented use. An unreported destination is a data-quality gap and is not an automatic co-product. | fao-postharvest-handling-vegetables, fao-gap-framework-2003 |
Allocation rules · 6
| Rule ID | Applies to | Rule | Source IDs |
Field return, composting, feed, treatment, and disposal are separate pathways and are not interchangeable co-products. | fao-gap-framework-2003 |
allocation_rule_6 | foreground_burden_allocation | Concrete cards do not inherit numerical ranges from the former aggregate card. Determine quantities from original records, stock/meter reconciliation and the declared reference flow; no default quantity or numeric screen is supplied without evidence matching the identity, unit, period and boundary. Missing range evidence is a quality disclosure, not zero use or proof of completeness. |
