Classification mapping
Source
1. Scope and Applicability
This PCR guides a foreground data package for fresh, whole, and unprocessed carrots and turnips. The default boundary runs from preparation of the declared field, bed, or protected unit and sowing through crop management, irrigation, nutrient and crop-protection inputs, harvest, optional de-soiling and washing, grading, cooling, primary packing, and the declared farm-gate or pack-house hand-off. Young or mature roots may be delivered when the crop, variety, maturity, root state, grade, washing state, and gate are disclosed.
Seed production, nursery production, processed, cut, canned, frozen, pickled, dried, juiced, retail, consumer-storage, and consumer-use products are outside the default scope. Potatoes, beets, radishes, and other root vegetables require their own product-category treatment. Durable irrigation or protected-cultivation infrastructure, machinery manufacture, land-use change, and post-gate transport are excluded unless separately attributed and disclosed. Field residues, culls, rejects, wash wastewater, removed soil, and packaging waste remain in the foreground until their declared fate or hand-off is recorded.

| Required qualifiers | crop (carrot or turnip) and variety; CPC 01251 basis; production geography; production year and crop cycle; open-field or protected route; sowing and harvest dates; young or mature state; root, size, grade, and moisture state; irrigated or rain-fed status; nutrient products and nutrient basis; crop-protection program; washing, cooling, and packaging state; destinations of marketable, cull, reject, residue, wastewater, removed-soil, and packaging-waste streams; declared gate |
Binding: parameterized
For a matching carrot route only, the verified Carrot UUID 050a9dc0-7d9a-49da-9ad3-1892d880cdc7 may be selected with its actual state and gate. Turnips require their own verified identity. Do not represent a crop mixture by the carrot flow; keep distinct outputs and explicit aggregation.
When constructing a foreground data package, the items listed in Required qualifiers must be declared in dataset metadata, process notes, the reference-flow comment, product description, or an equivalent data-package field.
The reference identity must cover the actual species, unprocessed state and producer handoff declared by this PCR. Independently verify the concrete identity before generating a final exchange; an identity limited to one root crop or an industrial ingredient input cannot stand for this reference product.
4. Measurement and Unit Rules
| rule_id | Applies to | Required property | Required unit | Rule |
|---|---|---|---|---|
reference_root_mass | marketable roots, culls, rejects, residues, and losses | Mass | kg | Weigh harvested roots, marketable output, culls, rejects, field losses, handling losses, and residues separately and reconcile them before conversion to the 1,000 kg reference output. |

water_delivery_basis | irrigation, withdrawal, washing, and wastewater | Volume | m3 | Record crop irrigation, fertigation carrier water, washing water, and source withdrawal separately and disclose the meter or water-balance basis. |
harvest_grade_reconciliation | harvest, grading, and packing | Mass and declared grade | kg and declared fraction | Retain each harvest batch, gross harvested mass, marketable mass, culls, rejects, and losses so the declared grade is reproducible. |
moisture_and_root_state | harvest and gate output | Mass and moisture | kg and declared moisture basis | Report moisture, maturity, root state, and washing state at the gate; do not count water removed during washing as product output. |
5. System Boundary

Urea fertilizer (root_crop_management_agricultural_nutrient_inputs_urea)
Collection scope and applicability for root_crop_management_agricultural_nutrient_inputs. The following concrete identities have separate cards and apply only when use or generation is evidenced inside the original process scope. They are not mandatory inputs or a default recipe. Document non-use; missing records are not zero. Add a separate concrete card for any other actual material instead of substituting one of these names or UUIDs. Preserve attribution and boundaries and avoid double counting components included in outsourced services.
Collect each fertilizer product separately. Preserve each actual product identity, quantity, formulation, nutrient composition, application event, and allocation; do not count a compound product more than once. Raw activity or stage basis: per 1,000 kg marketable fresh root output.
Confirm identity, grade, state and unit from equipment, supplier and contemporaneous measurements; the product UUID does not establish actual use or upstream-provider compatibility. Count physical product mass once and retain moisture, N/P/K composition and application events; nutrient quantities are calculated attributes, not additional purchases of the same product. Give unlisted compound and organic fertilizers separate cards identified by formulation or feedstock.

Use this product identity only when the actual formulation and grade are compatible. Retain supplier composition and mass records; do not substitute nutrient mass, dilute solution mass or service activity for the product mass. The UUID alone supplies neither a dose nor an emission factor.
Ammonium sulfate fertilizer (root_crop_management_agricultural_nutrient_inputs_ammonium_sulfate)
Confirm identity, grade, state and unit from equipment, supplier and contemporaneous measurements; the product UUID does not establish actual use or upstream-provider compatibility. Only for direct natural-water abstraction owned by this foreground boundary. Select the actual source/compartment and compatible volume or mass identity. A municipal or other purchased water receipt is a product supply, with its provider withdrawal covered upstream once; it is not this elementary input. Keep the withdrawal-to-field supply ledger, pumping, distribution losses and internal delivered-water transfers explicit. Do not add the same supplier abstraction or internal delivery as another external resource use. Retain missing source identity or quantity as a completeness gap.

7. Allocation and Co-product Handling
| rule_id | Applies to | Rule | source_ids |
|---|---|---|---|
allocation_same_crop_and_route | multiple fields, cultivars, sites, or routes | Keep records separate through normalization. If aggregation is necessary, allocate shared inputs by documented area-time, operating time, water delivered, throughput, or mass. | iso-14044-2006 |
allocation_marketable_and_off_grade | marketable roots and declared secondary streams | Use mass allocation when culls or downgraded roots have a documented product recipient and function. If discarded, returned, or treated, model the destination instead of assigning a co-product credit. | iso-14044-2006; mass-balance-identity |
allocation_shared_water_and_energy | shared irrigation, washing, cooling, or equipment records | Allocate shared utilities by measured water, product mass, batch time, or operating time and state the selected basis. | fao-crop-evapotranspiration-56; fao-postharvest-handling-vegetables |
allocation_reusable_packaging | reusable crates, bins, and pallets | Allocate packaging production and replacement over verified service cycles and assign losses to the route where they occur. Do not spread a single-use item over undocumented cycles. | fao-postharvest-handling-vegetables |
allocation_residue_destination | residues and rejects with different fates | Preserve destination-specific rows. Field return, compost, feed, treatment, and disposal are separate pathways and are not interchangeable co-products. | fao-gap-framework-2003; iso-14044-2006 |
Concrete cards do not inherit numerical ranges from the former aggregate card. Determine quantities from original records, stock/meter reconciliation and the declared reference flow; no default quantity or numeric screen is supplied without evidence matching the identity, unit, period and boundary. Missing range evidence is a quality disclosure, not zero use or proof of completeness.
8. Foreground Data Collection, Calculation, and Quality Rules
Specific input identification before dataset completion
Identify the actual input for this operation from supplier specifications, equipment and primary records. This is a mandatory collection requirement, not an exchange. Before dataset completeness, represent each used material, formulated product, carrier or independently purchased service by one physically specific card with its native quantity/property; confirm a compatible UUID, or retain an explicit unresolved identity and do not claim a fully linked dataset. Do not substitute a conditional example for an unknown actual input, invent a recipe, omit required use or infer zero from missing records. Attribute shared use, reusable assets and inclusive services once; preserve the original stage/period and measured throughput link to final reference output. The former aggregate range is not a component limit or consumption default.

crop_protection_input_specific_input | cp_crop_protection_records | Operation root_crop_management: Record each herbicide, insecticide, fungicide, biological control, or other crop-protection product applied to the crop, retaining active substance and formulation. Original quantity method: Sum product quantity by active substance, formulation, site, and treatment event; do not infer product identity from a generic pesticide total. |
primary_flexible_packaging_specific_input | cp_packaging_records | Operation harvest_and_gate_preparation: Record bags, film, or other flexible primary packaging applied before the declared gate. Packaging is conditional and is reported only when used. Original quantity method: Use packaging issue records by material, batch, and declared reuse or disposal state. |
reusable_crate_packaging_specific_input | cp_packaging_records | Operation harvest_and_gate_preparation: Record reusable crates, bins, or pallets used before the declared gate, including material, mass, verified service cycles, and losses. Original quantity method: Use issue records and verified service cycles; allocate replacement over documented cycles and record losses separately. |
Retain raw site, lot, cycle and stage quantities and denominators in each collection protocol. Reconcile stocks, losses, moisture and co-product attribution first, then normalize: normalized exchange = attributable raw exchange × declared reference quantity / accepted hand-off product quantity on the same boundary and measurement basis. Apply perennial-establishment and shared-operation attribution before this normalization. Never set an internal-transfer quantity equal to the final reference quantity. Per declared reference flow means the amount, unit and product state in section 3; the data package must declare its actual route and gate.

Use packaging issue, loss, and waste-treatment records by material and batch. This is a mandatory specific-output collection requirement, not a selected exchange. Preserve every actual waste, residue, reject and co-product from this operation. Create separate cards for physically distinct streams with actual material, composition/state, quantity, receiving route and Product/Waste role before dataset completeness; verify a compatible UUID or explicitly retain its unresolved identity. A genuinely mixed stream may remain one physically defined mixture supported by composition records; never invent separation or count its components again. Keep liquid and solid treatment quantities separate. Preserve original period, output balance, reference normalization and allocation rules; missing records do not establish zero or exclusion. fao-postharvest-handling-vegetables; mass-balance-identity | kg and units | each packaging batch | pre-gate preparation period | site and line | per declared reference flow | invoice, reuse log, and loss record |

Calculation Rules
| rule_id | Applies to | Formula or rule | Inputs | Output | source_ids |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
calc_reference_normalization | all inventory rows | normalized amount = recorded amount / marketable farm-gate mass * 1,000 kg | recorded amount; marketable farm-gate mass | normalized row value | mass-balance-identity |
calc_area_occupation | land occupation | area-time = declared area × crop occupation period | area; dates; route | ha*a or declared area-time | fao-gap-framework-2003 |
calc_nutrient_content | N, P, K, and organic nutrient cards | nutrient mass = product mass × documented nutrient fraction; retain product and nutrient bases separately | product mass; label, plan, or analysis | kg N, kg P2O5, kg K2O, or organic product mass | fao-gap-framework-2003 |
calc_irrigation_withdrawal | irrigation and withdrawal | Calculate source withdrawal from measured delivery and the declared conveyance or return-flow method; retain measured values where available. | source meter; delivered water; return flow | source withdrawal and delivered water | fao-crop-evapotranspiration-56 |
calc_managed_soil_emissions | N2O, NH3, nitrate, and phosphate rows | Apply one declared method to nutrient, amendment, residue, soil, and drainage records; document direct and indirect pathways separately. | nutrient and residue records; method factors | declared elementary emissions | ipcc-2019-refinement-managed-soils; ipcc-2006-guidelines-agriculture |
calc_harvest_mass_balance | marketable output, culls, residues, losses, and waste | Reconcile harvested mass with marketable roots, culls, field residues, removed solids, water, packaging waste, and measurement tolerance. | harvest; grade; residue; waste records | balanced output set | mass-balance-identity |
calc_conditioning_water_balance | washing water and wastewater | Use one defined process control volume and matched period in water-mass units. Discharged water = external supplied water + water in incoming product/material + other actual external water inflows + opening water stock - water in all outgoing products/residues - actual evaporation - water in separately exported streams - closing water stock. Convert measured volumes only with a compatible documented density. Internal recirculation remains within that boundary and cancels; do not subtract it again from fresh-water inflow. A genuinely external reclaimed-water receipt is an external inflow. Retain liquid discharge separately from its dry solids/pollutant masses. Prefer measured discharge and use the balance as reconciliation; missing components or unexplained residuals are gaps, not automatic wastewater, evaporation or zero. | water input; reuse; discharge; balance terms | wastewater volume | fao-postharvest-handling-vegetables; mass-balance-identity |
calc_reusable_packaging | reusable packaging | Allocate packaging mass and replacement over verified service cycles and assign losses to the route where they occur. | packaging mass; cycles; loss record | per-cycle packaging input and waste | fao-postharvest-handling-vegetables |
calc_pregate_transport | pre-gate transport service | transport service = transported mass (t) × documented distance (km); state return or empty-leg treatment. | mass; distance; route; load | t*km | fao-gap-framework-2003 |
calc_reference_mass_reconciliation | harvest and gate preparation | harvested mass = marketable output + culls and rejects + residues + field and handling losses, with moisture and tare treatment disclosed. | harvest weights; grade; residues; losses | reconciled crop-cycle mass balance | mass-balance-identity |
chemical_species_mass_accounting | elementary_nutrient_emissions | Final elementary exchanges use the mass of the identified substance and one actual receiving compartment. Keep nutrient/activity ledgers separate: species-specific N2O-N × 44/28 gives N2O, NH3-N × 17/14 gives NH3, nitrate-N × 62/14 gives nitrate, and phosphate-P × 95/31 gives phosphate. If the selected flow is elemental phosphorus instead, report kg P and convert phosphate mass by 31/95 only when that species basis is evidenced. Apply a conversion exactly once only when the method output is on the elemental basis; measured compound mass is not reconverted. Total nutrient losses cannot be assigned to a single species without a supported split, and residual/retained soil nutrient is not an emission. Keep direct/indirect pathway ledgers and avoid repeating a pathway already included in the chosen method or upstream inventory. Factor uncertainty ranges screen factors on their stated basis, not final compound amounts or admissible site emissions. Normalize the attributable compound mass once using the accepted reference quantity and the matched measured output. Unknown activity, identity or compartment remains an evidence gap and blocks a completeness claim. | cp_managed_soil_emission_records; species-specific activity ledger, method pathway and factor basis, matched accepted output | Identity-specific exchanges and reconciled activity records |

Evidence applicability: cited general farm-record and postharvest frameworks do not supply crop-specific yields, lifetimes, gate cutoffs or LCA allocation defaults. Those are this PCR methodology decisions; qualify them by the actual species, route and period and obtain compatible agronomic evidence before asserting completeness. Provisional author ranges are screening aids, not empirical acceptance limits or substituted measurements.
