1. Scope and Applicability
This PCR guides foreground data package construction for green coffee produced from cultivated coffee trees and transferred at the declared farm gate, first conditioning mill, or green-coffee warehouse gate. It covers perennial coffee production, cherry harvest, wet, honey or dry primary processing, drying and stabilization, hulling, cleaning, grading, sorting, storage when it occurs before the gate, and documented routing of pulp, mucilage, parchment, husk, wastewater, defects, rejects and losses.
The route applies to Arabica, Robusta and other cultivated coffee species or cultivar groups when the species or group, geography, production system, processing method and gate are declared. Roasted coffee, ground coffee, decaffeinated coffee, instant or soluble coffee, coffee beverages, nursery production, retail packaging, consumer use, spent coffee grounds and post-gate distribution are excluded. Wild collection and land-use change require a separate scope decision.
Wet, honey or semi-washed, and dry or natural processing are alternative route states within this PCR. The data package must identify the route actually used; it must not combine cherry, parchment and green-bean quantities without a lot-level mass balance.
2. Product Category Identity
| Field | Value |

| classification_refs | CPC 3.0 01610, Coffee, green; mapping relation: exact |
| covered_products | cultivated coffee transferred as green, unroasted coffee after the declared first conditioning route |
| excluded_products | fresh coffee cherries without green-coffee conditioning; dry parchment or dry cherry when no green-coffee hand-off is declared; roasted, ground, decaffeinated, soluble or beverage products; nursery material; wild-collected coffee; retail and consumer products |
| representative_product | graded green coffee beans at declared moisture basis and gate |
| production_route | perennial coffee production, cherry harvest, wet/honey/dry processing, drying, hulling, cleaning and grading |
| market_state | green, unroasted coffee in bulk or declared handling packaging at the farm, first mill or warehouse gate |
3. Reference Flow
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| What | green, unroasted coffee at the declared gate |
| How much | 1 kg |
| How well | species or cultivar group, processing method, green-bean moisture basis, grade, defect criterion, geography, production system and gate declared |
| How long or cycle | one declared crop year and processing campaign; perennial establishment, replacement and termination phases annualized and indexed to the represented crop years |
| reference_flow_link | reference_product_at_declared_handoff |
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Reference amount | 1 |
| Reference product flow | Coffee, green |
| Reference flow property | Mass 93a60a56-a3c8-11da-a746-0800200b9a66 |
| Reference unit group | Units of mass 93a60a57-a4c8-11da-a746-0800200c9a66 |
| Reference unit | kg |
| Required qualifiers | coffee species or cultivar group; geography; production system and certification status; orchard or farm block; crop year; processing route; fresh-cherry, parchment and green-bean moisture basis; grade and defect criterion; drying or stabilization state; gate; storage duration when included; residue, reject and wastewater fate |
The reference flow is net green coffee at the declared gate. Tare, foreign matter, packaging, parchment, husk and other non-green-coffee materials are excluded from the reference amount and recorded separately. A foreground package must declare the required qualifiers in dataset metadata, process notes, the reference-flow comment, product description or an equivalent data-package field.
| Attribute | Screening reference | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Green-bean moisture | 8-13 percent wet basis; replace with lot measurement | fao-green-coffee-processing-africa |
| Processing route | wet/washed, honey/semi-washed, or dry/natural; one route per lot or explicitly separated lot set | fao-arabica-coffee-manual-lao; fao-green-coffee-processing-africa |
Each foreground dataset must explicitly select one actual route, declared gate, product state and output row. Reconcile the selected terminal route with reference_product_at_declared_handoff; normalize that handoff output to the reference quantity and retain preceding-stage outputs as measured transfers. Raw weighing, mass reconciliation and lot traceability requirements continue to apply.
The sole reference output is reference_product_at_declared_handoff, receiving the selected actual route product at the declared gate. Existing route-output ids identify the source and physical state; they are no longer individually fixed to the reference quantity.
4. Measurement and Unit Rules
| rule_id | Applies to | Required property | Required unit | Rule |
|---|---|---|---|---|
measurement_01 | reference product and all coffee states | Mass 93a60a56-a3c8-11da-a746-0800200b9a66 | kg | Record cherry, parchment, husk, pulp, wet-mill input, dry-mill input, green coffee, rejects and residues with a declared as-received or dry-matter basis. Do not mix moisture bases in one mass balance. |
measurement_02 | reference product quality | Mass and moisture | kg; percent wet basis | Measure or declare green-bean moisture, grade, defect criterion and sample or lot basis. The screening moisture interval is a QA reference, not a universal fixed value. |
measurement_03 | fertilizer, soil amendments and direct nitrogen flows | Product mass and nutrient basis | kg product; kg N | Record formulated product or amendment mass separately from nutrient mass. If emissions are calculated, retain the nutrient basis, application event and selected method. |
measurement_04 | irrigation, wet processing and wastewater | Volume or mass | m3 or kg | Keep irrigation delivery, source withdrawal, process water, recirculation, discharge, retained solids and wastewater treatment separate. Preserve meter readings and conversion factors. |
measurement_05 | fuel, electricity and drying energy | Carrier-specific property | L, kg, MJ or kWh | Preserve carrier, equipment, operation, run or batch and original unit. Convert only with a documented factor and allocate shared equipment once. |
measurement_06 | crop year, perennial phases and processing batches | Area-time, duration and batch identity | ha·year, day, h or batch id | Link establishment, replacement, productive phase, harvest lot, processing run, changeover, storage period and termination events to one declared period or batch. |
5. System Boundary
The default foreground boundary starts with the managed coffee production object and its declared crop year or perennial phase. It includes establishment and replacement when attributable to the represented output; soil and nutrient management; irrigation; crop protection; field energy; harvest; primary processing; drying; stabilization; hulling; cleaning; grading; sorting; and storage before the declared gate. Upstream production of fertilizers, crop-protection products, energy, water supply, treatment services and packaging uses background datasets unless the study declares them as foreground.
The boundary ends at green coffee at the declared farm, first mill or warehouse gate. Roasting, grinding, decaffeination, soluble coffee, beverage preparation, retail, consumer use and post-gate distribution are downstream. A dry or natural route may bypass pulping and washing, but it still declares whole-cherry drying, hulling and the associated residue states. A wet or honey route records pulping, fermentation or mucilage removal, washing where used, drying and wastewater treatment or discharge.
Boundary Abstraction
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| declared_starting_condition | established_orchard_or_coffee_stand_and_declared_crop_year |
| starting_condition_role | perennial_biological_production_condition |
| product_classification_scope | CPC 3.0 01610, Coffee, green; unroasted green coffee at the declared gate |
| recursive_input_rule | Coffee in the same product category entering a processing or blending boundary is recorded as a separately identified lot and is not recursively traced into another coffee PCR; purchased coffee used only for blending is outside the default single-origin route and requires explicit scope review |
| upstream_dataset_requirement | Use reviewed upstream datasets for planting material, nutrients, crop protection, water supply, energy, treatment, packaging and transport services when they cross the declared foreground boundary |
| disclosure | Declare farm or mill identity, block or supplier scope, crop year, species or cultivar group, production system, processing route, cherry-to-green mass balance, moisture basis, grade, gate, storage duration, intended outputs, residues, rejects, wastewater and allocation decisions |
Boundary Rules
| rule_id | Applies to | Rule | source_ids |
|---|---|---|---|
boundary_01 | managed production | Include the managed coffee stand, crop-year management, actual inputs, field emissions, harvest and the hand-off to primary processing; include establishment, replacement and termination when they are attributable to the declared perennial production period. | fao-good-farming-practices; iso-14044-2006 |
boundary_02 | primary processing | Include the route actually used: wet/washed, honey/semi-washed or dry/natural. Identify raw cherry, intermediate parchment or dry cherry, prepared green coffee, water, energy, rejects and wastewater or dry-processing residues. | fao-arabica-coffee-manual-lao; fao-green-coffee-processing-africa |
boundary_03 | drying and storage | Include drying and stabilization before the gate. Record drying technology, weather or energy service, moisture measurements, storage duration and re-wetting, mould or quality-loss events when material. | fao-ota-coffee-code; fao-green-coffee-processing-africa |
boundary_04 | recursive inputs and services | Treat purchased coffee, materials, utilities and treatment services as separately identified upstream inputs. Do not recurse into another green-coffee PCR or invent a fixed identity for an unresolved route-specific exchange. | iso-14044-2006 |
boundary_05 | losses, residues and rejects | Keep cherries lost in the field, pulp, mucilage, parchment, husk, wastewater solids, defects, broken beans, rejected lots and storage losses in the foreground until a documented co-product, recovery, treatment or disposal hand-off is recorded. | fao-green-coffee-processing-africa; mass-balance-identity |

Process: Primary coffee processing and drying (coffee_primary_processing_and_drying)
The processing mode is batch-indexed. The route must identify the raw input state, the prepared or stabilized state and the hand-off. Wet processing may include pulping, fermentation, mucilage removal and washing; honey processing retains part of the mucilage during drying; dry processing dries whole cherries before hulling.

Process: Product Measurement at the Declared Handoff (declared_reference_handoff)
This node records the actual product handoff at the existing system boundary for reconciliation and reference-quantity normalization. It adds no physical processing and does not presume drying, cooling, storage, packaging or transport. Each data package declares one actual route, one terminal product state, moisture or dry-matter basis, and gate. Feed only the accepted product delivered by that route at that gate into this node; do not add other routes as extra inputs. Record co-products separately and apply Section 7. Count preceding inputs, losses and emissions once. Normalize using the measured accepted net mass at the handoff; this measurement node changes neither mass, yield nor allocation.

7. Allocation and Co-product Handling
| rule_id | Applies to | Rule | source_ids |
|---|---|---|---|
allocation_01 | perennial coffee production | Apply calc_01 to block/cohort lifecycle quantities before allocating common burdens to actual intended products under allocation_03. Site productive-life/output evidence determines temporal shares; annual operating records stay in their own crop year. Area*time is only the stated common-stand-service driver, never an alternative final-product denominator. | iso-14044-2006; mass-balance-identity |
allocation_02 | shared farm, wet mill and dry mill resources | Attribute shared meters, machinery, water, storage, operators, cleaning and changeover burdens once using measured activity, run time, batch throughput, lot mass or documented service. | iso-14044-2006; mass-balance-identity |
allocation_03 | green coffee and intended co-products | For grading/handling of comparable green-coffee grades under the same operation, use measured dry-coffee throughput; separately metered grade-specific work is direct-assigned. For drying service, use attributable measured water removal when shared heat duty is evidenced, keeping start/end moisture and heat losses; otherwise directly meter runs before allocation. Cultivation or processing jointly yielding coffee and a separately intended pulp/husk product does not justify wet-mass shares merely from its mass balance. After directly assigning separable activities, allocate only residual common burden B among the complete intended-product set. Use a physical driver only when records establish how it represents consumption of that shared operation; being weighable is insufficient. Share a_i=d_i/sum(d_j), B_i=Ba_i; record native units and reconcile sum(a_i)=1. If no applicable causal driver exists, use first-separation economic shares a_i=(q_ip_i)/sum(q_j*p_j), with representative same-period quantities, consistent currency, comparable gates and prices before output-specific downstream work. An unavailable price is not zero; unreliable or missing denominator data make allocation incomplete. Test the material alternative as sensitivity, not an interchangeable primary method. Waste and internal transfers are excluded from the product denominator; their attributable handling remains included. No substitution credit follows from this rule. | ghg-protocol-product-standard-2011 |
allocation_04 | pulp, mucilage, parchment, husk, residues and rejects | Treat a stream as a co-product or recovered material only when function, recipient, quantity, quality, destination and hand-off are documented. Otherwise retain its burden as residue or waste through treatment or disposal. | iso-14044-2006; mass-balance-identity |
allocation_05 | rework, downgrade and storage loss | Keep burden on off-spec, reworked, downgraded or storage-loss material until its next declared hand-off; never count a lot as both accepted green coffee and reject, co-product or loss. | mass-balance-identity |
The applicable primary allocation branch is fixed by allocation_03. Retain the decision evidence, drivers and fractions for each actual joint-output node; do not substitute another primary method merely because it produces a preferred result. Sequential cherry, parchment and green-coffee states are not co-products, and internal transfers carry inherited burden once. Avoided-production credit is not implied by a recovered-material destination.
8. Foreground Data Collection, Calculation, and Quality Rules
Inventory completeness: conditional named cards are examples of individual exchanges, not an exhaustive recipe or a requirement to use those products. Before completing a foreground package, enumerate every actual planting stock, nutrient, crop-protection formulation, asset material, operating service, carrier, packaging material, waste stream and applicable elementary substance separately, using its physical identity, state, native property/unit, origin or receiving compartment, and measured or method-calculated quantity. Missing identity or quantity remains a completeness gap, never an assumed zero. Preserve the actual lot and phase basis; do not sum intermediate transfers as additional final output or duplicate burdens included in purchased services.
Retain raw site, lot, cycle and stage quantities and denominators in each collection protocol. Reconcile stocks, losses, moisture and co-product attribution first, then normalize: normalized exchange = attributable raw exchange × declared reference quantity / accepted hand-off product quantity on the same boundary and measurement basis. Apply perennial-establishment and shared-operation attribution before this normalization. Never set an internal-transfer quantity equal to the final reference quantity. Per declared reference flow means the amount, unit and product state in section 3; the data package must declare its actual route and gate.
The first dataset is produced from primary records. Coffee farms and mills must link perennial production phases to crop years, harvested lots to processing batches, and processing batches to green-coffee grades and residue destinations.

Calculation Rules

|---|---|---|---|---|---|
calc_01 | perennial production | Keep one block/cohort lifecycle ledger. For each activity identity and native unit (or each burden component) separately, pool establishment, immature/pre-bearing operations, attributable replacement, termination and zero-output-year operating quantities as E, excluding operating quantities of positive-output productive years already recorded annually. Do not add unlike materials/units into one scalar E; link each replacement to the cohort/stand it benefits. Define Q_y as all accepted green-coffee grades from that cohort/year at the same reference moisture and gate, and Q_L=sum(Q_y) over its productive life. Assign E_y=EQ_y/Q_L; Q_L is a measured completed-cohort total, or for a still productive cohort an evidenced site yield trajectory with stated start/end, past measurements and future-yield/lifetime uncertainty. This is the PCR temporal attribution convention, not a universal lifetime or equal annual yield assumption. Map establishment crop output to green coffee using linked lot records. Assign shared estate quantities to cohorts first using separately measured use, or planted areatime for genuinely common stand services; do not switch between area, plant count and final kg as interchangeable denominators. Include attributable failed-establishment costs in the benefiting cohort/service scope; put operating quantities from a year with Q_y=0 into E once for lifetime-output attribution, rather than dropping them or charging them again as another year's annual operation. For year y, add E_y to its directly attributable productive-year quantities, apply allocation_03 to joint products, then divide once by the matched accepted reference-grade mass under calc_02. Do not also include the full E as a current-year input, allocate E_y by lifetime yield again or assign 1/N years without output evidence. If Q_L or the final reference denominator is unknown/nonpositive, a per-kg result is incomplete. | cohort and phase ledger E; measured/projected lifecycle Q_y; moisture and lot conversions; shared-service drivers | year-attributed raw quantities E_y before co-product allocation and one final normalization | iso-14044-2006; mass-balance-identity |
calc_02 | production and processing normalization | normalized amount = collected amount ÷ net accepted green coffee at the same declared moisture and gate basis | collected amount; accepted green coffee; moisture basis; gate | per-kg reference-flow amount | mass-balance-identity |
calc_03 | coffee route mass balance | raw coffee input = accepted green coffee + documented co-products + residues + rejects + wastewater solids + losses, after moisture-basis reconciliation | batch input; all output states; moisture and dry-matter records | reconciled batch output | mass-balance-identity; fao-green-coffee-processing-africa |
calc_04 | nutrient and soil emissions | For managed-soil N2O use IPCC 2019 Refinement, Vol.4 Ch.11 with its mapped 2006 provisions. Primary fallback is Tier 1: direct N2O-N follows Eq.11.1; volatilisation/deposition N2O-N follows Eq.11.9; leaching/runoff N2O-N follows Eq.11.10 only where that pathway meets the chapter applicability conditions. Treat direct and both indirect terms separately, then kg N2O=(direct N2O-N + deposition N2O-N + leaching N2O-N)*44/28. Collect FSN, FON, FCR, FSOM and, only where actually applicable, grazing/organic-soil terms; derive activity terms under sections 11.2.1.3/11.2.2.3. Choose factors and fractions from Tables 11.1 and 11.3 matching the documented climate, N form and land/management category; retain the exact row, version, units and uncertainty. A country/region Tier 2 factor replaces the corresponding default only when its scope and activity definitions match this coffee field; Tier 3/model or measured flux replaces only the demonstrated covered pathway with independent validation and complete event/season coverage. Never stack the replacement onto the fallback. Annual N input and modelled N2O are raw period quantities: apply temporal/product attribution and calc_02 once afterwards. Leached N and volatilised NH3+NOx-N used by the indirect method are pathway activity ledgers, not automatically nitrate or ammonia final exchanges. Separate measured species may be quantified as time-integrated mass flux across the actual field boundary with concentration/flow or validated gas-flux measurements, species basis, sampling coverage and incoming/background treatment recorded; do not infer an unmeasured species split. Other emissions, fuel combustion and residue treatment require their own applicable source-located method and actual process boundary; this N2O rule is not their emission factor. Missing activity/factor/pathway evidence remains incomplete, not zero. | field-year activity terms; climate/N-form/soil classification; source table rows; tier qualification; pathway and species ledger | separate direct/indirect kg N2O and any separately evidenced species exchanges | ipcc-2019-managed-soils-method |
calc_05 | shared batch or campaign resources | allocate shared energy, water, labor, storage and changeover records once by measured run, lot mass, throughput or documented service | shared record; run; batch; lot; allocation basis | process and lot amount | iso-14044-2006; mass-balance-identity |
calc_06 | storage | storage loss = opening lot mass − dispatched lot mass − documented retained or transferred material, after tare and moisture-basis reconciliation | opening; dispatch; transfer; loss; moisture | storage loss | mass-balance-identity |
coffee_field_emissions_identity_and_fate | coffee_plantation_production | Identify every actual emitted substance and receiving compartment separately. Quantify each supported pathway with its own activity, method, chemical-species basis and native unit; distinguish elemental N/P ledgers from final compounds. Soil nutrient retention or a mass-balance residual is not automatically an emission. This replaces an ambiguous aggregate exchange, not the collection obligation. Before dataset completeness, create one concrete card per actual exchange, verify a compatible UUID or retain an explicit unresolved identity, and record quantity, unit, stage/period, destination and evidence. Reconstruct the raw attributable numerator from the linked protocol and normalize once to the matched accepted reference output. Missing data is not zero; no range of the former aggregate is an individual-stream default. | cp_coffee_emission_records | Identity-specific exchanges and reconciled activity records | ipcc-2019-refinement-afolu |
coffee_processing_coproduct_identity_and_fate | coffee_primary_processing_and_drying | Identify each actually separate material stream, composition, state and recipient. Keep spent preservation agents, brine, animal/plant material, packaging, drainage and intended co-products separate when separately handled; instantiate only streams actually evidenced at this operation. A physically mixed stream may have one composition-defined identity only with compatible treatment evidence, without also counting its components as additional exports. Distinguish marketed outputs, internal rework, waste transfer, purchased treatment and elementary discharge; do not duplicate treatment burdens. System boundary rules · 7
| Rule ID | Applies to | Rule | Source IDs |
|---|---|---|---|
system_boundary_rule_1 | foreground_system_boundary | The default foreground boundary starts with the managed coffee production object and its declared crop year or perennial phase. It includes establishment and replacement when attributable to the represented output; soil and nutrient management; irrigation; crop protection; field energy; harvest; primary processing; drying; stabilization; hulling; cleaning; grading; sorting; and storage before the declared gate. Upstream production of fertilizers, crop-protection products, energy, water supply, treatment services and packaging uses background datasets unless the study declares them as foreground. | |
system_boundary_rule_2 | foreground_system_boundary | The boundary ends at green coffee at the declared farm, first mill or warehouse gate. Roasting, grinding, decaffeination, soluble coffee, beverage preparation, retail, consumer use and post-gate distribution are downstream. A dry or natural route may bypass pulping and washing, but it still declares whole-cherry drying, hulling and the associated residue states. A wet or honey route records pulping, fermentation or mucilage removal, washing where used, drying and wastewater treatment or discharge. | |
boundary_01 | managed production | Include the managed coffee stand, crop-year management, actual inputs, field emissions, harvest and the hand-off to primary processing; include establishment, replacement and termination when they are attributable to the declared perennial production period. | fao-good-farming-practices, iso-14044-2006 |
boundary_02 | primary processing | Include the route actually used: wet/washed, honey/semi-washed or dry/natural. Identify raw cherry, intermediate parchment or dry cherry, prepared green coffee, water, energy, rejects and wastewater or dry-processing residues. | fao-arabica-coffee-manual-lao, fao-green-coffee-processing-africa |
boundary_03 | drying and storage | Include drying and stabilization before the gate. Record drying technology, weather or energy service, moisture measurements, storage duration and re-wetting, mould or quality-loss events when material. | fao-ota-coffee-code, fao-green-coffee-processing-africa |
boundary_04 | recursive inputs and services | Treat purchased coffee, materials, utilities and treatment services as separately identified upstream inputs. Do not recurse into another green-coffee PCR or invent a fixed identity for an unresolved route-specific exchange. | iso-14044-2006 |
boundary_05 | losses, residues and rejects | Keep cherries lost in the field, pulp, mucilage, parchment, husk, wastewater solids, defects, broken beans, rejected lots and storage losses in the foreground until a documented co-product, recovery, treatment or disposal hand-off is recorded. | fao-green-coffee-processing-africa, mass-balance-identity |
Allocation rules · 6
| Rule ID | Applies to | Rule | Source IDs |
|---|---|---|---|
allocation_01 | perennial coffee production | Apply calc_01 to block/cohort lifecycle quantities before allocating common burdens to actual intended products under allocation_03. Site productive-life/output evidence determines temporal shares; annual operating records stay in their own crop year. Area*time is only the stated common-stand-service driver, never an alternative final-product denominator. | iso-14044-2006, mass-balance-identity |
allocation_02 | shared farm, wet mill and dry mill resources | Attribute shared meters, machinery, water, storage, operators, cleaning and changeover burdens once using measured activity, run time, batch throughput, lot mass or documented service. | iso-14044-2006, mass-balance-identity |
allocation_03 | green coffee and intended co-products | For grading/handling of comparable green-coffee grades under the same operation, use measured dry-coffee throughput; separately metered grade-specific work is direct-assigned. Share a_i=d_i/sum(d_j), B_i=B*a_i; record native units and reconcile sum(a_i)=1. If no applicable causal driver exists, use first-separation economic shares a_i=(q_i*p_i)/sum(q_j*p_j), with representative same-period quantities, consistent currency, comparable gates and prices before output-specific downstream work.
Otherwise retain its burden as residue or waste through treatment or disposal. | iso-14044-2006, mass-balance-identity |
allocation_05 | rework, downgrade and storage loss | Keep burden on off-spec, reworked, downgraded or storage-loss material until its next declared hand-off; never count a lot as both accepted green coffee and reject, co-product or loss. | mass-balance-identity |
allocation_rule_6 | foreground_burden_allocation | The applicable primary allocation branch is fixed by allocation_03. |
