1. Scope and Applicability

This PCR guides a foreground data package for Brazil nuts collected from managed or wild Brazil-nut tree systems and transferred as Brazil nuts in shell at a declared farm, primary-conditioning, storage, or hand-off gate. It covers tree or forest-unit management, seasonal pod collection, pod opening that leaves the hard shell intact, cleaning, grading, storage, and the declared gate hand-off.

The canonical reference-flow identity is the platform record Brazil nuts, in shell, classified as CPC 3.0 01377, with the platform qualifier Production mix, at farm gate; Fresh, unprocessed produce. The in-shell reference is the individual seed with its hard shell retained after the woody capsule has been opened. An unopened woody capsule is an intermediate fruit, not the in-shell reference product. Declare any cleaning, conditioning or storage before the selected hand-off.

This PCR applies to conventional, organic, rain-fed, irrigated, mixed-crop, and smallholder or estate routes when the cultivar or cultivar group, geography, tree age, crop year, harvest maturity, pod status, shell condition, moisture basis, quality state, and gate are disclosed. It excludes nursery operations except as upstream inputs, shell removal, splitting or hatcheting, kernel processing, oil extraction, roasted or otherwise processed brazil-nut products, shell processing, retail packaging, consumer use, and transport or storage after the declared gate. It does not select an Other or n.e.c. product category.

The required qualifiers must be declared in dataset metadata, process notes, the reference-flow comment, product description, or an equivalent data-package field. Net product mass excludes container tare. The platform identity is the fresh, unprocessed farm-gate product flow after woody-capsule opening. Opening the capsule is required to obtain the individual in-shell seeds; any further grading, drying, or storage is an extended gate and must retain that qualifier rather than being represented as a new product category. A shelled or split Brazil nut must not be used as the reference product for this PCR.

Each foreground dataset must explicitly select one actual route, declared gate, product state and output row. Reconcile the selected terminal route with reference_product_at_declared_handoff; normalize that handoff output to the reference quantity and retain preceding-stage outputs as measured transfers. Raw weighing, mass reconciliation and lot traceability requirements continue to apply.

The sole reference output is reference_product_at_declared_handoff, receiving the selected actual route product at the declared gate. Existing route-output ids identify the source and physical state; they are no longer individually fixed to the reference quantity.

5. System Boundary

The default foreground boundary runs from the declared tree-and-forest starting condition through perennial tree management, harvest and collection, and the fresh farm-gate hand-off of accepted brazil-nuts in shell. Capsule opening that leaves each seed hard shell intact is required before every in-shell reference gate. Include further cleaning, grading and storage only when they occur before the declared gate. Upstream production of planting material, fertilizers, crop-protection products, supplied irrigation water, energy carriers, machinery services, and packaging uses representative background datasets. Shell removal, splitting, kernel processing, oil extraction, roasted or otherwise processed brazil-nut products, retail, post-gate transport, and post-gate storage are outside the default boundary.

6. Process Inventory Structure

The foreground route is batch-based at harvest, pod opening, grading, and storage, even when tree management is recorded continuously. Each harvest round, conditioning batch, grade lot, and storage receipt receives a batch or campaign identifier with a declared start, end, input set, output set, cleaning or changeover event, and reporting period. Shared equipment and shared-run burdens are assigned once to the relevant batch or campaign.

For a multi-site forest-collection dataset, enumerate every contributing forest management unit, collection crew, receiving point, and conditioning location. Link site-level inputs, pod yields, quality evidence, and outputs to the common farm-gate boundary, then report the aggregation and representativeness decision. A site must not be omitted or counted twice because several collection points share one receiving ledger.

Process: Brazil nut Depoding, Primary Conditioning, and Grading (brazil-nut_primary_conditioning_and_grading)

Woody-capsule opening is required before the individual in-shell seed reference. It removes the woody capsule while leaving each seed hard shell intact; shell removal, splitting, and kernel recovery are outside this PCR. Include further conditioning only when actually performed before the declared gate. The pod opening and primary conditioning step is the material treatment node; its treated output and all residual destinations are recorded separately.

Storage loss and damaged product (brazil-nut_storage_loss)

Record only material actually discarded from this storage lot, by measured mass, actual condition and treatment/disposal recipient. Keep mould-damaged nuts or other physically removed product separate from water evaporation, respiratory change, internal rework, transfers and unexplained stock differences under calc_06. Where distinct actual materials have different identities or destinations, create separate concrete cards; do not duplicate a physical mixture and its components. Raw activity or stage basis: retain the original lot mass and storage duration before final-reference normalization.

  • Selected flow: brazil-nut storage loss or damaged product

  • Flow property / unit: Mass / kg

  • Amount rule: measured actual discarded material mass by lot, identity and recipient; reconcile under the storage reconciliation in Section 8 without assigning unexplained or evaporative loss to this Waste quantity

A total storage-decrease screen including evaporation or unexplained difference cannot be applied to this Waste amount; no bound generates a quantity or replaces recipient evidence.

Process: Product Measurement at the Declared Handoff (declared_reference_handoff)

This node records the actual product handoff at the existing system boundary for reconciliation and reference-quantity normalization. It adds no physical processing and does not presume drying, cooling, storage, packaging or transport. Each data package declares one actual route, one terminal product state, moisture or dry-matter basis, and gate. Feed only the accepted product delivered by that route at that gate into this node; do not add other routes as extra inputs. Record co-products separately and apply Section 7. Count preceding inputs, losses and emissions once. Normalize using the measured accepted net mass at the handoff; this measurement node changes neither mass, yield nor allocation.

allocation_06batch, campaign, and changeover attributionLink tree, harvest, conditioning, pod opening, grading, and storage inputs and outputs to the batch or campaign that generated them. The hard shell remains part of the in-shell reference product and is not a separate co-product in this PCR. Kernel, oil, and shell-removal outputs belong to downstream brazil-nut-product PCRs and must not be introduced into this inventory. No output may be counted both as a marketed pod co-product and as forest or conditioning residue.

Concrete cards do not inherit numerical ranges from the former aggregate card. Determine quantities from original records, stock/meter reconciliation and the declared reference flow; no default quantity or numeric screen is supplied without evidence matching the identity, unit, period and boundary. Missing range evidence is a quality disclosure, not zero use or proof of completeness.

8. Foreground Data Collection, Calculation, and Quality Rules

Retain raw site, lot, cycle and stage quantities and denominators in each collection protocol. Reconcile stocks, losses, moisture and co-product attribution first, then normalize: normalized exchange = attributable raw exchange × declared reference quantity / accepted hand-off product quantity on the same boundary and measurement basis. Apply perennial-establishment and shared-operation attribution before this normalization. Never set an internal-transfer quantity equal to the final reference quantity. Per declared reference flow means the amount, unit and product state in section 3; the data package must declare its actual route and gate.

Internal movements cancel once. Measure discarded material by identity and destination; evaporation/respiration or other supported physical losses are separate from Waste. The signed difference is an investigation item, never automatically a measured loss, waste exchange or emission. Keep actual measurements and uncertainty; do not clip or infer zero. Environmental Coverage Calculation Rules

rule_idApplies toFormula or ruleInputsOutputsource_ids
calc_managed_environment_coverageactual managed-production nodesFor the actual owned managed-production node(s), require an applicability ledger for direct soil N2O, volatilisation/deposition-derived indirect N2O, leaching/runoff-derived indirect N2O, NH3/NOx and nutrient losses, plus actual liming/urea-use CO2. Primary calculation precedence is a representative pathway measurement, then a validated site/national method applicable to the crop, soil and management; otherwise use the compatible 2006 IPCC/2019-refined managed-soil equations and climate/input-specific factor selection for N2O and lime/urea CO2. Retain the exact edition, equation, tier, activity and factor units, climate and management applicability; no universal dose or emission factor is prescribed. Non-soil/protected routes need a method valid for their actual medium; do not force soil factors onto an inapplicable route. Use the same period/field N ledger for synthetic and organic additions, residues, actual relevant mineralisation/organic-soil and excreta pathways; demonstrate absent pathways rather than infer zero. Calculate direct and each indirect component separately, then assign each once to matching existing or new concrete cards; never add a total to its components. Convert N2O-N to molecular N2O by 44/28 once. NH3, NOx and nutrient/pesticide loss require an applicable measured or documented substance/fate model; total N/P or an unexplained balance residual is not a compound release. Keep actual receiving compartments and molecular versus elemental/reporting bases explicit; indirect formation does not remove the same N from the source ledger twice. Include actual local combustion releases separately using fuel-specific combustion-only methods; purchased electricity/heat/services retain upstream coverage once. Add one identity-specific exchange only for a supported release and reuse an existing matching card, with verified UUID or explicit unresolved identity. Missing applicable method/activity/factor/identity blocks completeness; it is not a justified zero. Attribute raw activity/release totals and normalize once to the matched accepted reference output.cp_phase1_environment_coverageattributed native environmental quantities per matched final referencereview-ipcc-soils-2019
calc_managed_land_coverageactual managed-production nodesFor each actual owned managed-production site, collect the occupied area and dated occupation intervals, including attributable establishment/immature and production periods. Occupation is area multiplied by actual duration, converted explicitly to the selected area-time unit (1 ha = 10,000 m2; time in years); hectares per crop-cycle alone are not an area-time result without duration. Partition or take the union of overlapping establishment/management intervals so the same area-time is counted once, with shares across actual co-users summing to one. Record evidenced land transformation separately by actual from/to land class, event area and date under the declared land-use method; transformation has area units and is not added to occupation. Planting, continued occupation or missing prior-land data do not establish a transformation or zero transformation. Preserve actual historical-event attribution and carbon-stock/emission method coverage where applicable; no invented land conversion or generic carbon credit. Instantiate separate compatible elementary identities with verified UUIDs or explicit unresolved identities; attribute once and normalize to the matched final reference. Purchased completed biological inputs inherit compatible upstream land coverage once instead of duplicating it locally. Missing applicable land identity, area, duration or prior-state evidence remains a completeness gap; documented no transformation is a valid absence.cp_phase1_environment_coverageattributed native environmental quantities per matched final reference

system_boundary_rule_1foreground_system_boundaryThe default foreground boundary runs from the declared tree-and-forest starting condition through perennial tree management, harvest and collection, and the fresh farm-gate hand-off of accepted brazil-nuts in shell. Capsule opening that leaves each seed hard shell intact is required before every in-shell reference gate. Include further cleaning, grading and storage only when they occur before the declared gate. Upstream production of planting material, fertilizers, crop-protection products, supplied irrigation water, energy carriers, machinery services, and packaging uses representative background datasets. Shell removal, splitting, kernel processing, oil extraction, roasted or otherwise processed brazil-nut products, retail, post-gate transport, and post-gate storage are outside the default boundary.

Allocation rules · 8
Rule IDApplies toRuleSource IDs
allocation_01tree management and harvest with an intended pod outputPrefer process subdivision when tree, harvest, pod opening, pod collection, and nut records are independently available. When pod is deliberately collected and transferred as an intended co-product, allocate shared burdens by measured dry-matter mass; if dry-matter data are unavailable, use measured as-received mass and disclose the limitation.iso-14044-2006, fao-brazil-nut-fruit-structure
allocation_02pod retained on site or discardedIf pod remains on the field, is composted without an intended product hand-off, or is discarded as residue, do not assign a co-product credit. Retain its mass and fate as residue or waste and assign shared burden to the intended in-shell brazil-nut output.iso-14044-2006, mass-balance-identity
allocation_03premium, standard, and downgraded in-shell gradesUse physical mass allocation between mutually exclusive accepted grade outputs when common conditioning burdens cannot be subdivided. Grade-specific operations remain with the grade receiving them; do not allocate the same lot to both a grade row and an aggregate output row.iso-14044-2006, mass-balance-identity
allocation_04perennial tree periods and phasesAnnualize establishment, immature years, replacement, intercropping attribution, and removal over the declared tree life and accepted output basis. Link every input and output to a crop year or lifecycle phase; do not count a replacement event in both the original and replacement tree phases.fao-brazil-nut-fruit-structure, iso-14044-2006
allocation_05downgraded, reworked, rejected, and recovered lotsKeep rejected and downgraded lots separate from accepted product. Rework retains the producing-node burden and is linked once; recovered or intentionally marketed material requires a declared destination and allocation decision; discarded material receives its declared treatment burden.mass-balance-identity, iso-14044-2006
allocation_06batch, campaign, and changeover attributionLink tree, harvest, conditioning, pod opening, grading, and storage inputs and outputs to the batch or campaign that generated them. Record cleaning and changeover events once and do not allocate shared-run burdens to more than one batch without a documented driver.mass-balance-identity, iso-14044-2006
allocation_rule_7foreground_burden_allocationThe hard shell remains part of the in-shell reference product and is not a separate co-product in this PCR. Kernel, oil, and shell-removal outputs belong to downstream brazil-nut-product PCRs and must not be introduced into this inventory. No output may be counted both as a marketed pod co-product and as forest or conditioning residue.
allocation_rule_8foreground_burden_allocationConcrete cards do not inherit numerical ranges from the former aggregate card. Determine quantities from original records, stock/meter reconciliation and the declared reference flow; no default quantity or numeric screen is supplied without evidence matching the identity, unit, period and boundary. Missing range evidence is a quality disclosure, not zero use or proof of completeness.
