# Live goats at farm gate

## 1. Scope and Applicability

This PCR covers live domestic goats and kids managed for meat, milk, fibre, breeding, replacement, or mixed purposes and transferred alive at the producing farm gate. It applies from admitted breeding or replacement animals through reproduction where present, kid rearing, grazing or browse and supplementary or housed feeding, animal health, optional milking or fibre collection, water and energy use, enteric emissions, manure routing, selection or finishing, live-weight measurement, and transfer of ownership or control.

The reference product excludes sheep and other ruminants; goat meat or carcasses; raw goat milk, mohair, cashmere, skins, semen, and embryos as separate reference products; separately sold husbandry or veterinary services; post-farm transport; and animals after slaughterhouse receipt. Extensive or transhumant, mixed or agropastoral, and housed or semi-intensive routes are alternative implementations of the parent managed-biological-production activity. A dataset shall select one route, or keep route-specific records separate before transparent aggregation.

## 2. Product Category Identity

The reference-product UUID remains blank. Confirmed platform candidates are restricted to slaughter-ready, slaughter-weight, or marginal-extensive goats and therefore do not represent this broad category. Head count is activity data only and cannot replace live-weight mass.

## 4. Measurement and Unit Rules

| rule_id | Applies to | Required property | Required unit | Rule |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| `reference_live_weight` | reference live goat | Mass `93a60a56-a3c8-11da-a746-0800200b9a66` | kg | Measure live weight immediately before transfer at the producing farm gate. Retain scale point, date, individual or lot basis, and any fasting or gut-fill convention. |
| `count_mass_conversion` | births, entries, mortalities, and transfers recorded by head | Mass `93a60a56-a3c8-11da-a746-0800200b9a66` | kg | Convert count to mass only with animal-class-specific measured or sampled mean live weight; retain both count and conversion evidence. |
| `feed_dry_matter` | grazed browse and forage, conserved feed, concentrates, by-products, supplements, and milk replacer | Mass | kg dry matter and kg as-fed | Retain as-fed amount and measured or supplier dry-matter fraction. Do not aggregate wet and dry feed records without conversion evidence. |
| `water_separation` | drinking and service water | Mass or volume | kg or m3 | Distinguish supplied water from rainfall and unmanaged surface water and disclose metering or estimation method. |
| `gas_species_basis` | methane, nitrous oxide, and ammonia | Mass | kg CH4, kg N2O or kg N2O-N, and kg NH3 or kg NH3-N | Preserve the named substance and elemental or molecular basis; any conversion shall be explicit and reproducible. |
| `inventory_reference_normalization` | all inventory rows | Actual flow property | exchange unit per reference flow | The inventory and collection aggregation fields below express final amounts per declared reference flow. Keep all raw collection records, original denominator qualifiers, route/period strata, unit conversions and allocation requirements. For each flow, first obtain its attributable amount in its own numerator unit using the existing rules; then divide by the measured accepted reference-output quantity of the same scope and multiply by the declared reference quantity. Do not mix species, states, gates or incompatible routes; count transfers and shared burdens once. A missing, zero or untraceable accepted-output denominator is a blocking data-quality issue. Keep provisional QA ranges on their explicitly stated bases; they are not conversion factors or production defaults. Compute normalized amount = attributable amount * declared reference quantity / measured accepted reference-output quantity. Apply normalization once only; never divide an already normalized value again. |
| `stage_throughput_linkage` | stage records and final package contributions | Actual flow property and its stated raw basis | retain native numerator and stage denominator units | Keep the original lot, event, cohort, period and stage denominators with their units. Reconstruct the attributable numerator A with measured stage quantity Q_stage and documented attribution before final normalization. If a quoted amount a_B corresponds to an explicit stage basis B_stage (for example, 1000 kg), use A = a_B * Q_stage / B_stage. If r_stage is already an intensity in exchange-unit per stage-unit, instead use A = r_stage * Q_stage, with no second division by B_stage. A raw attributable total is used directly. Final contribution = A * declared reference quantity / measured accepted final output. Convert compatible units explicitly and apply each attribution/allocation share exactly once; never treat a quoted amount or intensity as a raw total. Link stage transfers, losses, rejects, stocks, shared services and allocation to the same actual route, period and final-output stratum. For a 1000 kg basis retain 1000 kg explicitly. Do not assume unit yield, equal fresh/dried mass, equal head mass, equal dose quality or interchangeable gates. Missing links, unsupported unit conversion, zero denominators and untraceable allocation block dataset production. Stage-native datasets retain their own stage reference; package contributions are a separate projection. |

## 5. System Boundary

### Boundary Abstraction

| Field | Value |
| --- | --- |
| declared_starting_condition | Breeding or replacement goats admitted to the represented herd, plus purchased or transferred feed, forage, water, energy, health products, and other managed inputs entering the producing farm. |
| starting_condition_role | The admitted herd and external management inputs start the foreground managed-biological-production responsibility; reproduction, kidding, rearing, grazing or housing, health management, milking or fibre collection when present, manure handling, selection, weighing, and transfer remain inside it. |
| product_classification_scope | Live goats corresponding to CPC 3.0 02123. Milk, fibre, manure, skins, meat, and services remain separately classified outputs or activities. |
| recursive_input_rule | Live goats obtained from another producer are recorded as upstream Product inputs supported by a supplier dataset; their pre-transfer production shall not be recreated recursively in the receiving farm process. |
| upstream_dataset_requirement | Require supplier datasets for external live goats, feed and forage, health products, supplied water, energy carriers, and inbound transport where material. Select concrete flow UUIDs during foreground generation only after identity, state, provider, and destination are known. |
| disclosure | Declare goat type, animal classes and purpose, route variant, grazing or housing regime, feed boundary, breeding and replacement treatment, milk and fibre handovers, manure pathways, shared assets and service periods, cohort or reporting period, geography, weighing point, and farm-gate handover. |

###### Electricity at the equipment supply point (`energy_supply_electricity`)

**Collection scope and applicability for energy_supply.** The following concrete identities have separate cards and apply only when use or generation is evidenced inside the original process scope. They are not mandatory inputs or a default recipe. Document non-use; missing records are not zero. Add a separate concrete card for any other actual material instead of substituting one of these names or UUIDs. Preserve attribution and boundaries and avoid double counting components included in outsourced services.

Record purchased electricity, fuels, heat, or other energy carriers used for housing, lighting, pumping, milking, fibre collection, feeding, manure handling, and weighing. Foreground records determine the actual carrier.
Denominator and scope requirements：per kg live goat at farm gate

Confirm identity, grade, state and unit from equipment, supplier and contemporaneous measurements; the product UUID does not establish actual use or upstream-provider compatibility. Retain the electricity supply point, fuel grade, density and heating-value basis. Distinguish purchased heat from on-site fuel conversion without counting its input fuel again.

- Selected flow: Alternating current `455f0ef5-6118-4f2b-a3f5-1f75e0afe3ca`
- Flow property / unit: Energy / kWh
- Amount rule: Collect raw quantities for this identity under `cp_water_energy` and calculate the exchange per declared reference flow using the original attribution rules.
- Value mode: Foreground record (`foreground_record`)
- Specificity: Site-specific (`site_specific`)
- Normalization basis: per declared reference flow
- Basis kind: Reference flow (`reference_flow`)
- Evidence kind: Collected record (`collected_record`)
- Collection protocol: `cp_water_energy`
- Sources: `fao-leap-small-ruminants-2016`; `fao-agricultural-energy`

This binding is alternating current at the use point with supply technology, voltage and provider unspecified. Confirm actual AC supply; DC requires a different identity. The database reference is 1 MJ: preserve meter kWh and convert once using 1 kWh = 3.6 MJ when linking reference quantities. Internal generation links to its foreground generator, without an additional purchased-electricity burden.

###### Diesel fuel supplied to equipment (`energy_supply_diesel`)

Confirm identity, grade, state and unit from equipment, supplier and contemporaneous measurements; the product UUID does not establish actual use or upstream-provider compatibility. Retain the electricity supply point, fuel grade, density and heating-value basis. Distinguish purchased heat from on-site fuel conversion without counting its input fuel again.

- Selected flow: Diesel fuel `9d258d75-6792-4f1c-9856-81602ed8f816`

###### Inbound freight transport service (`inbound_freight_transport`)

Record freight service for feed, bedding, health products, fuel, and other purchased materials only when transport is inside the declared foreground boundary. Animal movement by a distinct livestock service remains unbound unless exactly verified.

Denominator and scope requirements：per kg live goat at farm gate

- Selected flow: Road freight transport service for inbound materials

##### Waste flows

No Waste-flow input is required by default. Record imported manure, bedding waste, or other wastes only when accepted for treatment inside the declared boundary and select a destination-compatible identity.

##### Elementary flows

No elementary input is prescribed by default. Land occupation, water withdrawal, and other resource exchanges shall be added only when their compartments, properties, and calculation methods are explicitly supported.

#### Outputs

##### Product flows

###### Live goat reference output (`live_goat_reference_output`)

Record the live animal mass weighed immediately before the farm-gate transfer of ownership or control. The semantic identity stays unbound until a broad farm-gate goat Product flow is verified.

Denominator and scope requirements：1 kg live goat at the producing farm gate

Raw reference-output records: Exactly 1 kg of measured live weight after normalization; retain the measured lot or individual mass before normalization. Preserve the measured accepted lot quantity and every required qualifier. The amount below is the normalized reference exchange, not an assertion that a physical lot contains only one unit.

- Selected flow: Live domestic goat at producing farm gate
- Flow property / unit: Mass `93a60a56-a3c8-11da-a746-0800200b9a66` / kg

  - Basis: normalized reference output
  - Basis kind: Reference flow (`reference_flow`)
  - Evidence kind: Method formula (`method_formula`)
  - Sources: `fao-leap-small-ruminants-2016`

###### Raw goat milk co-product (`raw_goat_milk_coproduct`)

Record raw goat milk only when it is intentionally collected and transferred independently. Milk consumed by kids or discarded is not this co-product. Record warm or chilled state, temperature and actual gate separately for each lot. This broad card has no fixed UUID: a chilled farm-gate identity is eligible only for an actually chilled, gate-matched lot after identity confirmation. Never infer cooling from a UUID; include measured pre-handover cooling inputs and losses only when cooling actually occurs.

Denominator and scope requirements：per kg live goat at farm gate

- Selected flow: Raw goat milk, handover state and gate qualified
- Flow property / unit: Mass `93a60a56-a3c8-11da-a746-0800200b9a66` / kg

###### Direct and indirect nitrous oxide to air (`manure_nitrous_oxide_air`)

Calculate N2O from managed manure and deposited excreta, retaining direct and indirect pathways and the N2O or N2O-N basis.

Coverage of this single N2O card: use calc_manure_n2o_coverage to calculate direct and applicable indirect components separately for the represented node, then report only their non-overlapping molecular-N2O sum assigned to this card. Keep storage and managed-soil calculations distinct. Exclude components explicitly covered by a linked process, retain the coverage evidence, and do not duplicate them as both aggregate and component exchanges. Missing indirect-pathway evidence is not zero.

| `complete_intended_output_set` | live goats, milk, fibre, breeding or cull animals, and exported manure | Enumerate every independently intended output and its handover. | `shared_infrastructure_attribution` | housing, fencing, water, handling, milking, fibre, transport, and manure assets shared by groups or periods | Enumerate all consumers and service periods, choose and evidence a physical service driver where possible, and reconcile allocated shares to the total asset or service burden exactly once. | `fao-leap-small-ruminants-2016` |

Concrete cards do not inherit numerical ranges from the former aggregate card. Determine quantities from original records, stock/meter reconciliation and the declared reference flow; no default quantity or numeric screen is supplied without evidence matching the identity, unit, period and boundary. Missing range evidence is a quality disclosure, not zero use or proof of completeness.

| `allocation_residual_precedence` | remaining common burden with no specified primary branch | Resolve any study-specific joint-product instruction in this PCR that has no specified primary branch using this precedence; retain an already explicitly prescribed category-specific primary method. First directly assign separable output-specific activities. For the remaining common burden B, use a physical driver d_i only when measured operation or biological-service records demonstrate the causal consumption represented by that driver. A product being weighable, valuable or lower grade alone is insufficient; do not switch arbitrarily between area, time, mass and revenue. For comparable grades receiving the same common handling, measured processed mass is applicable only with the same service demand, state and moisture basis demonstrated. Share a_i=d_i/sum(d_j); B_i=B*a_i. If no defensible causal physical driver exists for that common operation, use gate- and period-matched economic shares a_i=(q_i*p_i)/sum(q_j*p_j), with the complete independently intended output set, compatible quantity/price units, currency, representative prices and values before output-specific downstream processing. Missing price or denominator evidence makes the allocated result incomplete, not a zero-priced product or a single-output system. Report shares summing to one and sensitivity to a material alternative; an alternative is not an interchangeable primary result. Waste, retained residues and internal transfers receive no co-product share, while their attributable production/handling burdens remain with the producing saleable route. Retain unallocated physical quantities and mass balances separately. This branch gives no automatic substitution credit; any separately scoped substitution analysis retains the gross inventory and its actual displaced-function evidence. | `ghg-protocol-product-standard-2011` |

## 8. Foreground Data Collection, Calculation, and Quality Rules

### Specific input identification before dataset completion

Identify the actual input for this operation from supplier specifications, equipment and primary records. This is a mandatory collection requirement, not an exchange. Before dataset completeness, represent each used material, formulated product, carrier or independently purchased service by one physically specific card with its native quantity/property; confirm a compatible UUID, or retain an explicit unresolved identity and do not claim a fully linked dataset. Do not substitute a conditional example for an unknown actual input, invent a recipe, omit required use or infer zero from missing records. Attribute shared use, reusable assets and inclusive services once; preserve the original stage/period and measured throughput link to final reference output. The former aggregate range is not a component limit or consumption default.

| `feed_forage_browse_specific_input` | `cp_feed_and_grazing` | Operation managed_goat_herd: Record every managed diet source crossing the accounting boundary, including grazed forage or browse when its production is in scope, conserved feed, concentrates, by-products, supplements, and milk replacer. The umbrella remains unbound until actual feed identities are known. Denominator and scope requirements：per kg live goat at farm gate and declared herd period Original quantity method: Calculate the attributable final-package exchange under inventory_reference_normalization and stage_throughput_linkage using reconciled feed-supply records that retain in-boundary losses and their production burden. |
| `herd_health_products_specific_input` | `cp_health_inputs` | Operation managed_goat_herd: Record medicines, vaccines, disinfectants, mineral treatments, and other health products that cross the farm boundary. Apply the existing route, period, conversion and allocation rules; retain raw totals and the measured accepted reference-output denominator for the same scope. Perform final normalization exactly once; do not divide an already normalized amount again. `mortality_waste_specific_output`: Record goats that die before the reference handover and unusable animal material by mass and destination. Animals intentionally transferred alive as cull stock remain intended Product outputs, not waste. Denominator and scope requirements：per kg live goat at farm gate Calculate mass from measured carcass weight or head count times class-specific measured mean mass; record destination and treatment route. A genuinely mixed waste stream may remain one physically defined mixture with measured composition; do not invent separation or count its components again. Keep unlike units separate, retain the original allocation and reference normalization, and reconcile the output balance. ### Calculation Rules

| rule_id | Applies to | Formula or rule | Inputs | Output | source_ids |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| `calc_reference_live_weight` | reference output | reference mass = sum of measured eligible farm-gate live weights; normalized exchange = reference mass/reference mass | transfer weights; eligibility; handover date | 1 kg live goat reference output | `fao-leap-small-ruminants-2016` |
| `calc_feed_dry_matter` | feed and forage | Convert each feed-supply and intake ledger separately to DM using its own measured or supplier moisture fraction under calc_feed_supply_and_intake. Subtract refusals only in the intake ledger; retain their production burden in the supply ledger. | feed deliveries; rations; dry-matter fractions; refusals | kg dry matter by source and phase | `fao-leap-small-ruminants-2016`; `ipcc-2019-livestock-manure` |
| `calc_transport_service` | included inbound freight | For a measured delivery, t*km = this consignment's delivered tonnes × its included route kilometres; do not multiply by its share of the vehicle load again. Only when starting from a documented whole-vehicle transport total may the measured consignment share be applied once to that total. Reconcile included legs and normalize the attributable service once. | consignment delivered mass; included distance; or whole-vehicle transport total with measured consignment share | attributable t*km by route and mode | `fao-leap-small-ruminants-2016` |

| `calc_manure_emissions` | manure CH4, N2O, and NH3 | assign excreta to reconciled pathways; apply pathway-specific volatile-solids and nitrogen methods; subtract recovery and transferred nutrients consistently; convert molecular basis explicitly | animal-days; intake; excretion; pathway shares; climate; duration; treatment; export; factors | kg CH4; kg N2O; kg NH3; pathway balance | `ipcc-2019-livestock-manure`; `fao-leap-nutrient-flows-2018` |
| `calc_multi_output_shares` | joint live-goat, milk, fibre, and manure outputs | attribution share = selected driver for one intended output/sum of the same driver for all intended outputs; shares shall sum to 1 | complete output set; quantities; qualities; prices or physical drivers; period | documented output shares | `fao-leap-small-ruminants-2016` |
| `calc_shared_asset_shares` | shared infrastructure | asset share = evidenced service driver for one consumer-period/sum of the same driver for all consumer-periods; allocated burdens shall reconcile to the asset total | asset burden; consuming nodes; service periods; driver | allocated shared burden by node and period | `fao-leap-small-ruminants-2016` |
| `calc_feed_supply_and_intake` | `feed_forage_browse` | Feed supply used by the represented operation = opening feed stock + receipts + on-site feed entering the operation - closing feed stock - documented unused returns or transfers out. Retain in-boundary spoilage, refusals and discarded leftovers in that supply. Actual intake = that supply - measured uneaten/discarded losses, after matching moisture/DM and period; use intake only for nutrition/metabolism. Opening stock retains its prior burden and is not another purchase. Trace any unused return or transfer and its burden destination; no automatic substitution credit. Attribute production once, through either the purchased-feed dataset or the represented on-site crop/collection node, never both for the same feed. Include actual waste treatment and manure contributions once, not as a second feed-production burden. | `cp_feed_supply_and_intake` | separate feed supply, intake and loss quantities, in matched as-fed/DM units | `fao-feed-loss-accounting-2018` |
| `calc_manure_n2o_coverage` | `manure_nitrous_oxide_air` | For each actual manure stage, calculate direct N2O, volatilisation/deposition-derived indirect N2O, and applicable leaching/runoff-derived indirect N2O separately with documented species/system activity and factor basis. Convert N2O-N to molecular N2O by 44/28 once; do not reconvert molecular masses. Retain component worksheets. Where an existing N2O card covers both direct and indirect emissions, report their non-overlapping sum; where separate direct/indirect cards exist, assign each component once to its matching card and never also report the sum. Pasture deposition and land application use the managed-soil method, not a manure-storage factor. Assign foreground versus linked treatment/pasture coverage explicitly; a manure export does not erase earlier emissions, and already covered downstream emissions are not repeated. Account for stock, transfers and previous N losses in the nitrogen cascade; indirect N2O is a downstream transformation of its precursor, not a second source-stage N loss. Normalize attributed molecular masses once to the accepted reference output. Document inapplicability; absent pathway data are not zero. | `cp_manure_n2o_coverage` | kg molecular N2O by pathway and assigned existing card | `ipcc-2019-livestock-manure`; `ipcc-managed-soils-2019` |
| `chemical_species_mass_accounting` | `elementary_nutrient_emissions` | Final elementary exchanges use the mass of the identified substance and one actual receiving compartment. Keep nutrient/activity ledgers separate: species-specific N2O-N × 44/28 gives N2O, NH3-N × 17/14 gives NH3, nitrate-N × 62/14 gives nitrate, and phosphate-P × 95/31 gives phosphate. If the selected flow is elemental phosphorus instead, report kg P and convert phosphate mass by 31/95 only when that species basis is evidenced. Apply a conversion exactly once only when the method output is on the elemental basis; measured compound mass is not reconverted. Total nutrient losses cannot be assigned to a single species without a supported split, and residual/retained soil nutrient is not an emission. Keep direct/indirect pathway ledgers and avoid repeating a pathway already included in the chosen method or upstream inventory. Factor uncertainty ranges screen factors on their stated basis, not final compound amounts or admissible site emissions. Normalize the attributable compound mass once using the accepted reference quantity and the matched measured output. Unknown activity, identity or compartment remains an evidence gap and blocks a completeness claim. | `cp_manure_pathways`; species-specific activity ledger, method pathway and factor basis, matched accepted output | Identity-specific exchanges and reconciled activity records | |

## 9. Validation Rules

| rule_id | Applies to | Rule | source_ids |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| `validate_reference_gate` | reference live-goat exchange | Require exactly 1 kg normalized live weight, the producing-farm gate, all required qualifiers, and no slaughter or post-farm activity in the reference exchange. Reject the narrow platform candidates for broad-reference use. | `fao-leap-small-ruminants-2016` |
| `validate_route_delta` | selected production route | Require one named parent managed-biological-production activity and evidence for every route delta in topology, inventory, calculation, data, or validation; preserve mutually exclusive route records until separate results exist. | `fao-leap-small-ruminants-2016`; `fao-ruminant-lca-2013` |
| `validate_period_balance` | cohort and reporting periods | Opening herd + births + entries − deaths − transfers shall reconcile to closing herd by class, subject to documented classification changes; replacements, terminations, and carry-over burdens shall occur in one period treatment only. | `fao-leap-small-ruminants-2016` |
| `validate_output_attribution` | multi-output instances | Require a complete intended-output list, each handover, one explicit attribution decision with evidence, shares summing to 1, and sensitivity where economic or another variable driver is used. | `fao-leap-small-ruminants-2016` |
| `validate_residue_waste_distinction` | manure, mortalities, discarded milk, and fibre | Require intended transferred products, retained internal materials, residues, losses, and Waste flows to be distinguished by destination and evidence. | `fao-leap-small-ruminants-2016`; `fao-leap-nutrient-flows-2018` |
| `validate_emission_basis` | CH4, N2O, and NH3 | Require named substance, molecular or elemental basis, method tier, factor source, complete animal and manure pathway drivers, and explicit basis conversion. | `ipcc-2019-livestock-manure`; `fao-leap-nutrient-flows-2018` |
| `validate_shared_infrastructure` | shared assets and services | Require two or more consumers or periods, service boundary, driver, evidence, shares reconciling to the total, and no duplicate process or period burden. | `fao-leap-small-ruminants-2016` |
| `validate_flow_binding` | all final exchanges | unresolved cards shall resolve one compatible concrete UUID from actual foreground records; every unbound card requires exact identity confirmation. UUID selection shall not change direction, type, state, route, provider, or handover to force a match. | |
| `v_foreground_emission_responsibility` | Actual operated nodes and linked services | Record responsibility for on-site fuel combustion and refrigerant leakage when applicable: either quantified foreground emissions or a named linked process explicitly covering them, never merely a fuel-supply or electricity-production input. Assess special-taxon biological and residue emissions using species/route evidence, without a generic livestock factor. Identify any unresolved pathway and withhold a completeness claim; document supported absence and prevent duplicate upstream/downstream accounting. | |
| `v_feed_supply_intake_separation` | All feed inputs | Reject an upstream feed inventory reduced by in-boundary refusal, spoilage or discarded leftovers without retaining their production burden. Reconcile supply, intake, stock, transfers and loss destinations under calc_feed_supply_and_intake. Do not reuse intake as supplied feed, assume zero-burden on-site feed or grant automatic avoided-product credits. | `fao-feed-loss-accounting-2018` |
| `v_manure_n2o_coverage` | Applicable manure and managed-soil N pathways | Require explicit direct and indirect pathway coverage, stage N balances and molecular-mass conversion. Map each component to an existing N2O card or an explicitly covering linked process once under calc_manure_n2o_coverage. Missing indirect-pathway evidence prevents a completeness claim; no default zero or duplicate aggregate-plus-components. | `ipcc-2019-livestock-manure`; `ipcc-managed-soils-2019` |
